How ScrapFit searches fabric scrap layouts

ScrapFit is a browser-based rectangular-piece nesting assistant for straight-edge fabric remnants. It normalizes every dimension to millimetres, expands quantities into individual pieces, and adds seam allowance and spacing before placement.

1. Remnant geometry

Rectangle, L-shape and clipped-corner presets are converted into polygons. A custom polygon can be entered as x,y points. Defect zones are independent rectangles that must not overlap any placed piece.

2. Placement search

The worker tries large-area, long-edge, priority and randomized piece orders. For every allowed orientation it scans candidate positions from existing edges and a configurable grid. A placement is accepted only when the rectangle stays inside the polygon and avoids defects and previous pieces.

3. Scoring

Completed pieces dominate every score. The selected mode then favours lower unused area, fewer used remnants, or a larger single leftover region. Because the search is heuristic and time-bounded, “Try another layout” can find a different valid arrangement.

4. Precision

Input dimensions remain exact. Precision controls the step between candidate positions. Fine mode explores more positions; Fast mode trades some placement opportunity for speed.
